Bio

Hi there! I am a medical doctor with a PhD in neuroscience. I'm on a mission to change lives with my passion for medical science & technology. Following my time in academia, I was chief medical officer and head of clinical development at a medtech startup/scaleup for 8 years here in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (www.nicolab.com). We developed cloud-based radiology software with artifical intelligence to help doctors treat stroke patients faster and better all over the world. During this time I also suffered from a severe burnout. I was out for 2 years, but was thankfully able to make a complete recovery. Finally, i'm also a conservatory trained musician in electronic music, which is my other great passion in life. I'd love to help you with: - Medtech startup pitfalls - How doctors work and think - Medical software development with artificial intelligence - Medical research methods and best practices - Awareness on burnout prevention and recovery Hope to see you soon! Ivo

Expertise

  • Data science

As a trained medical scientist with a clinical PhD, I am well versed in interpreting medical research. The quality of medical research unfortunately varies greatly, and recognizing well (and poorly) designed studies can make all the difference.

  • Idea validation

One of my main tasks is to benchmark new ideas for medical products within the acute care field. Once new ideas with high potential have been identified, we start the process of validation by key opinion leaders in the field within or outside our network.

  • Link building

As a medical doctor working at a medtech company, my greatest added value was providing that bridge between both worlds. I speak the language of doctors, engineers as well as more commercially minded people, and use this to improve the efficiency of their collaboration. I know how they think, what their priorities are, and the challenges they face. Spoiler: these are almost always very different.

  • Mindset coaching

Having experienced a severe burnout which kept me at home for 2 years, I was forced to work on my mindset and spent much effort getting to know myself better. What makes this horrible time worth it for me, is that I can pass on what I have learnt to other people, hopefully preventing them from experiencing this themselves.

  • Product management

At Nicolab, we had a constant drive to improve our products and service. I was involved in most steps of product development at the company, particularly from a medical and scientific research perspective.

  • Venting frustration

Growing with a small company is often very satisfying, but can also give huge challenges. Having experienced this process first hand, I can relate to feelings of being overwhelmed, frustration, and stress. Please reach out to me if you want to speak about this and I'd be happy to answer.
