CEO of GoSquared – focused on product and growth
As the CEO of GoSquared, I break my time between defining the long-term product roadmap we work towards, setting the goals, vision, and purpose for the company, hiring amazing people, and when possible, assisting with the design of our software platform. We work with thousands of amazing businesses, from one person startups, to some of the largest organisations in the world. I'm on GrowthMentor to share my learnings from over 10 years in the world of SaaS, and in building software products at scale.
Built GoSquared, a B2B SaaS business, from the age of 14. Took minimal funding and have focused on building a profitable (and proud!) software business steadily over time. I love talking about smart ways to be efficient with capital, ways to grow customer base and revenue, and why + how to avoid going down the path of investment when you don't need it.
Led the content marketing efforts for GoSquared for over 10 years – writing 100+ blog posts on product design, growth, business, and more. Also extensive experience in lead generation, and overall content marketing strategy.
Over 10 years of first-hand experience designing and implementing SaaS products, marketing sites, user onboarding flows, and more. Primarily in B2B. Extensive knowledge of Sketch, Adobe Illustrator, HTML, CSS, Marvel, and more.
Management of the GoSquared platform for 10+ years. Experience both managing product first-hand (ingesting feature requests, using data to inform decisions, understanding competitive landscape, and using instinct) to define product roadmap, and leading product management as a discipline within the team.
Used Close.io at GoSquared for many years to manage email communication and sales pipeline for our sales deals. Using many features including reporting, and email templating and sequences.
Using with 10s of thousands of contacts to run multiple drill campaigns based on user behaviour. Using Drip for onboarding sequences, lead capture on our blog, and retention emails.
Used Jira for several years both for product management and marketing tasks. Primarily experienced with Jira's "next gen" projects, and have integrated with other tools like ProductBoard and Jira.
Use MailChimp on a weekly basis to send a weekly newsletter to 20,000 subscribers. Extensive knowledge of the MailChimp platform over many years to design and build emails, and on their API as integration partner for GoSquared.
Use Trello extensively for project management at GoSquared to run our feature requests, our product roadmap, team weekly planning, and more. Also use on a personal basis for keeping my life in order.
Have been using Wordpress for many years to run personal blogs and the core GoSquared Blog and Engineering Blog. Also knowledge of Wordpress ecosystem with our work at GoSquared on theme development, and our integration work to bring the GoSquared Wordpress plugin to life.
Co-founded GoSquared, a primarily bootstrapped SaaS business that's been running since 2006. Have led and shipped multiple products serving SMBs including website analytics, live chat, CRM, and marketing automation software.
Have created and written hundreds of blog posts on the GoSquared Blog, and my own blog (James Gill Blog) to help build hundreds of thousands of visitors through organic traffic. Experience with long-form writing, SEO, lead capture, and more.
10+ years designing and collaborating with engineering to design and build high quality interfaces that scale to service millions of users. Experience with Figma, Sketch, Illustrator, and the practices within including wireframing, prototyping, paper sketching, high fidelity mockups, and dev handoff.
Building web applications from idea, to design to implementation with an engineering team. Product management decisions, quality design and user experience, and more are areas I am deeply fascinated by.
